How to Register a Trademark in El Salvador?

El Salvador updated its trademark rules with the Intellectual Property Law (Decree 66 of 2024), in force since February 2025. Trademarks are now handled by the Instituto Salvadoreño de la Propiedad Intelectual (ISPI), part of the Centro Nacional de Registros (CNR).
How to register a trademark in El Salvador?
- Search: check the registry for identical or similar marks before filing.
- File: submit the application online through the CNR’s eCNR services, with the mark, the owner’s details and the list of goods or services by class.
- Examination: the ISPI checks the formal requirements and whether the mark can be registered.
- Publication: once admitted, the application is published in the ISPI’s electronic Intellectual Property Bulletin, which replaced publication in the Official Gazette and newspapers.
- Opposition: third parties with a legitimate interest can oppose within the legal period after publication; oppositions can also be filed online.
- Registration: if there is no opposition, or it is rejected, the ISPI registers the mark and issues the certificate.
Term and renewal
A trademark registration lasts 10 years and can be renewed for further 10-year periods. Renewal can be requested online.
How to choose a suitable class?
El Salvador uses the Nice Classification, with 45 classes: 34 for goods and 11 for services. List every class that covers your current products and those you plan to sell.
What can be registered?
- Words, names, letters and numbers
- Logos, figures and combinations of words and designs
