Understanding Corporate Tax in Chile

Corporate tax in Chile is called the First Category Tax (Impuesto de Primera Categoría). This guide covers the 2026 rates, the tax regimes, the tax on profits paid to foreign shareholders and the filings every company must make with the Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII).
The tax ID comes first
Every company needs a RUT from the SII and must file its start of activities before it can invoice. The RUT is used for every filing, payment and invoice.
Corporate tax rates in 2026
| Regime | First Category Tax |
|---|---|
| General (semi-integrated) regime, art. 14 A | 27% |
| Pro Pyme general regime, art. 14 D No. 3 (small and medium companies) | 12.5% for 2025 to 2027, 15% in 2028, then 25% (Law 21,755) |
| Pro Pyme transparent regime, art. 14 D No. 8 | Not taxed at company level; the owners are taxed instead |
The Pro Pyme regimes are for companies whose average gross income stays under the legal threshold (75,000 UF) and whose owners meet the eligibility rules. Many foreign-owned groups fall under the general regime.
Tax on profits paid abroad
Dividends and profit remittances to foreign shareholders are subject to the Additional Tax (Impuesto Adicional) of 35%, withheld by the company. The First Category Tax already paid is credited against it. For shareholders resident in a country with a tax treaty with Chile the credit is full; otherwise, part of it is restored, raising the overall burden.
Other taxes
- VAT (IVA): 19% on sales of goods and most services.
- Stamp tax on loans and credit documents.
- Municipal business license (patente municipal), paid to the municipality where the company operates.
Monthly and annual filings
- Form 29, every month: VAT and provisional monthly payments (PPM). Due by the 12th of the following month, or the 20th for companies that file online and issue electronic invoices.
- Form 22, every year in April: the annual income tax return for the previous calendar year, preceded by the sworn statements due in March.
- Electronic invoicing is mandatory for all taxpayers.
Incentives
The main incentive is the R&D tax credit (Law 20,241): 35% of CORFO-certified R&D spending is credited against the First Category Tax, now available until 2035. See our guide to tax benefits in Chile.
How a company is set up in Chile
- Choose the company type. Most foreign founders use the SpA.
- If you are abroad, sign a power of attorney, apostilled and translated into Spanish, so a person in Chile can act for you.
- Sign the incorporation deed before a notary, or form the company online in the Registro de Empresas y Sociedades.
- Register the extract in the Commercial Registry and publish it in the Diario Oficial (both are automatic on the online registry).
- Obtain the company’s RUT and file the start of activities (inicio de actividades) with the SII.
- Bring in the capital and open a corporate bank account.
- Set up electronic invoicing, monthly Form 29 filings and payroll.
