Tax ID in Argentina (2026): What the CUIT Is & How to Get It

What is the Tax ID in Argentina?

If you’re starting a business in Argentina, one of the first things you’ll need to do is obtain a tax identification number, the CUIT, issued by ARCA (the federal tax agency that replaced AFIP in 2024). A CUIT is a unique identification number that’s required for almost all business activities in Argentina, including opening a bank account, invoicing, and paying taxes. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about getting a tax ID in Argentina for your company. For the full process, see our company registration in Argentina service.

Who needs a CUIT in Argentina?

Every company, branch and other legal entity that operates in Argentina needs a CUIT (Clave Única de Identificación Tributaria). So do the individuals involved: foreign partners and administrators need their own CUIT before the company is registered, and directors who live abroad must also register as self-employed contributors (autónomos). Employees are identified by a CUIL, which works the same way for payroll.

How a new company gets its CUIT

A company does not apply for a CUIT before it exists. First it is registered with the companies registry: the Inspección General de Justicia (IGJ) in Buenos Aires City, or the registry of the province where it is domiciled. Then it requests its CUIT from ARCA online, using the legal representative’s tax password (clave fiscal). For an SAS incorporated digitally in Buenos Aires City, the CUIT can be generated during the IGJ process. When registering, the company declares:

  • its registered bylaws and registration details
  • its fiscal domicile, a physical address in Argentina, and its electronic fiscal domicile, where ARCA sends notices
  • its activities, its authorities and the CUIT of each partner and administrator
  • its beneficial owners

CUIT for foreign partners and directors

Individuals who live abroad request their CUIT through a representative or authorized third party domiciled in Argentina. The representative files the request online through ARCA’s digital filing service, attaching Form 460 F/PD and the person’s passport or national ID. Foreign companies that will hold shares in an Argentine company first register with the companies registry under article 123 of the General Companies Law, and then obtain their own CUIT.

What the CUIT unlocks

  • Registration for VAT and corporate income tax, and as an employer
  • Electronic invoicing (factura electrónica), which is mandatory
  • Registration for the provincial gross revenue tax (Ingresos Brutos)
  • Opening a corporate bank account

Easyco handles the CUIT for the company and for each foreign partner and director as part of the incorporation.
