Tax ID in Chile (2026): What the RUT Is and How to Get It

What is your Tax ID in Chile? – RUT number

Tax ID in Chile (RUT) - Easyco

The tax ID in Chile is the RUT (Rol Único Tributario). Individuals and companies use it to file taxes, issue invoices, open bank accounts, sign contracts and hire staff. For Chileans, the RUT is the same number as their national ID (RUN). Companies and foreigners receive theirs from the Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII), the Chilean tax authority.

How a new company gets its RUT

  • Online registry: a company formed through the Registro de Empresas y Sociedades receives its RUT when it is incorporated.
  • Notarial deed: once the deed is signed, the extract registered in the Commercial Registry and published in the Diario Oficial, the company applies for its RUT with the SII online or at the SII office for its address.
  • Either way, the company then files its start of activities (inicio de actividades) with the SII, choosing its economic activity codes and tax regime and declaring its address in Chile.

RUT for foreign shareholders, directors and representatives

Foreign individuals and foreign companies that own shares in a Chilean company also need a RUT. A shareholder who does not live in Chile obtains it through a representative (mandatario) domiciled in Chile, who acts before the SII on its behalf. Directors and the legal representative of the company need their own RUT too; foreign residents get one with their Chilean ID card.

What the company uses its RUT for

  • Issuing electronic invoices, mandatory for all taxpayers.
  • Filing the monthly Form 29 (VAT and provisional payments) and the annual income tax return, Form 22, in April.
  • Opening a corporate bank account and registering employees.
