Mexico’s E-Commerce Surge: The Borderless Opportunity No One’s Talking About

Mexico is one of Latin America’s largest e-commerce markets, and marketplaces such as Amazon and Mercado Libre make it easy to reach buyers nationwide. Selling legally, though, means dealing with Mexican tax rules from the first sale. Here is what foreign founders should know in 2026.
Why Mexico’s e-commerce market keeps growing
- A large, young and connected population
- Growing use of digital payments and SPEI bank transfers
- Nationwide fulfillment networks run by the big marketplaces
- Proximity to the United States and the USMCA trade framework
Selling on Amazon and Mercado Libre
To sell as a Mexican business, you open a seller account with your company’s RFC, bank account details and tax information. Marketplaces then:
- Ask for your RFC and tax status certificate
- Withhold part of the VAT and income tax on your sales and pay it to the SAT
- Apply higher withholding if the seller has no RFC
Products must also meet Mexican labeling standards (NOMs), and imports go through a customs broker.
How to start an e-commerce business in Mexico
Legal entity
Most foreign founders set up an S.A. de C.V. so the business can invoice, import and hold inventory locally. Compare the types of companies in Mexico.
Tax and accounting
Every sale needs a CFDI electronic invoice, VAT is 16%, and monthly returns are due even if the marketplace withholds tax. See tax and accounting in Mexico.
Payroll
If you hire a local team, register with the IMSS and run compliant payroll from the first employee.
What sells well online in Mexico
Electronics, fashion, beauty, home goods and health products are among the most active categories, but check import duties and NOM rules for your product before you commit stock.
