Tax and Accounting Services in Mexico

Mexico’s tax system is digital and strict. The SAT receives every invoice in real time and expects monthly filings even from companies with no activity. This guide covers what a new company files in 2026 and why many foreign owners outsource it.
The main taxes
| Tax | Rate | Filing |
|---|---|---|
| Corporate income tax (ISR) | 30% | Monthly provisional payments, annual return by 31 March |
| VAT (IVA) | 16% (8% for qualifying businesses in the northern and southern border regions) | Monthly |
| Employee profit sharing (PTU) | 10% of taxable profit | Paid to employees each year |
| Dividends | 10% withholding on dividends paid to individuals and non-residents | When paid |
| Payroll | ISR withholding, IMSS contributions and a state payroll tax | Monthly |
Registration and ongoing compliance
- Register with the RFC and obtain the company’s e.firma (see the RFC).
- Issue every invoice as a CFDI electronic invoice, version 4.0.
- Send the monthly electronic accounting (chart of accounts and trial balance) to the SAT.
- File monthly ISR and VAT returns by the 17th of the following month, plus the monthly report on transactions with suppliers (DIOT).
- File the annual return and keep the beneficial owner records up to date.
Accounting standards
Companies keep their books in Spanish and in Mexican pesos, under Mexican Financial Reporting Standards (NIF). Records must be kept for at least five years.
Common challenges
- Monthly deadlines that apply even without revenue
- Matching CFDI invoices with bank movements
- Withholding rules for payments to individuals and foreign suppliers
- Penalties and blocked invoicing certificates when filings are missed
Why outsource tax and accounting?
An outsourced team keeps the monthly calendar, issues and checks CFDI invoices, and reports in English to the parent company, so you do not need an in-house finance team from day one. For payroll filings, see payroll compliance in Mexico.
